(2016) This remote community is located north of the Arctic Circle in the western coastal area of Canada. About 900, mostly Inuit residents, travel to southern regions by water, air and an ice road in the winter. Few remote hunting and fishing camps sit along the wide stretches of the frozen Mackenzie River delta channels leading to the shores of the Arctic Ocean and Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.
Some embrace the opportunities the all-weather road will bring, which is currently under construction and due for completion in 2017. The ice road will not be maintained by the government and will be used mostly as a snowmobile route.
Only the few remaining dog teams are spotted on the tundra and traditional languages are disappearing. Fear is felt by others that the new road will give opportunity for the young to leave their traditions and elders behind.
