Born in Poland (1980), Rafal Gerszak was forced to flee his home due to the Soviet regime. He and his family lived for some time in a West German refugee camp before immigrating to Canada in 1990. He spent three years studying photography and graduated in 2006 from Langara College in Vancouver, Canada. From 2008 to 2010, he worked on long-term projects dealing with the underlying issues of the Afghan conflict. Currently he examines life in Canada's Northern and most remote communities through photography and video.

His work has been exhibited internationally including at The New York Photo Festival and Noorderlicht Photofestival in the Netherlands. Rafal's multi-award-winning book for young adults, Beyond Bullets: A Photo Journal of Afghanistan, was published in 2011 by Annick Press.
